Thursday morning, August 4, 2011. 7:40am. Mom: getting ready to go to the gym
Madeline: climbing the stairs
Dad: right by Madeline
The incident: As Madeline reached the landing between the two set of stairs she stood to walk (as she always does) to the next set of stairs. She got excited seeing Aaron behind her and started running. She tripped and fell. Landing wrong on her hand.
The result: Crying. Lots and lots of unsoothable crying.
Duration of crying: 45 minutes
Action: Mom and Dad KNEW something was wrong when all the "normal" distractions didn't change her mood. Plus we noticed she kept holding her arm close to her body. We decided to call the pediatrician. As soon as she gets in the car to go, she stops crying. I'm thinking, I must just be over reacting..
8:30am Pediatrician office.
Of course we see a new-to-us pediatrician who probably thought we were child abusers when he heard the story of Madeline falling. She did NOT like him at all. Finally he concluded that she needed x rays.
9am X-rays
While waiting for 20 minutes Madeline seemed totally back to normal. She was walking around the waiting room, laughing, smiling, eating, talking. The technician was WONDERFUL and played with Madeline during the x-rays to keep her from crying. She was scared. Within two minutes, she came back in the room and told us she had a fracture on her arm right above her wrist.
10am back to pediatrician
Nurses look at X-ray and try to decided where the fracture is, if any at all, on the x-ray. No very reassuring!! Should not say things out loud to each other like, "What do you think?" "Looks like it's fractured." "Yep. That's what I thought." "Right here, right? pointing to x-ray. "I think so. Well, maybe here."
Finally dr. comes in thankfully without CPS report (I promise we ARE good parents!) Tells us it's broken. Puts temporary brace on it.
10:30am Home
Finally down for a nap and Mom gets a shower! So much for a workout today.
1pm Orthoped. office

Several women I know from the gym work there (that counts as my workout for the day right). They took great care of us. Nurses kept stopping by room to see how cute she is. I don't think they see many one yr olds there. The Dr. was WONDERFUL! Calm, quiet, sweet, grandfather type. Madeline got a pink cast and was fine until they were finished and he started forming it to her hand.

Update:
She has been great! Mom was calm through the whole process. Dad was a wreck! (Let the record state- I was the calm one for once!) This is HIS little girl and he is supposed to protect her. Madeline doesn't seem to even notice there is a cast on her arm. She doesn't seem to be in any more pain either. The biggest problem has been bathing her and keeping the cast dry. Poor thing- LOOVEES water. Bye bye swim lessons for the rest of the summer. She should only have to keep it on for a few weeks. We got back in two week for a check up. I am praying she learns to walk better BEFORE she gets this cast off and that we don't have any more injuries. She fell last night and has a nasty goose egg and scab on her forehead now too! That wasn't easy to cover up with a bow today!
Madeline's Uncle and Aunt came by to see her Friday and they brought her this stuffed animal dog with a pink cast on his arm too. It was so sweet. She LOVES it and carries around with her everywhere. I think she may break the poor dogs OTHER arm with how she's carrying it!
